From what you have described, the problem can be related to three things: The pilot needs cleaning or the Thermocouple has failed. Or, you're not holding the gas control valve in long enough for the thermocouple to properly heat up.
It usually requires at least 1 minute. To clean the pilot all you need is a can of compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with) to blowout the pilot tip opening. If none of the above solves the problem, then it's definitely a failed Thermocouple. Or your particular burner may use a Thermopile or Thermogenerator.
